- Why did the sign-up form reject a username I liked?
- Almost always one of three rules. Length: X caps usernames at 15 characters and wants at least 5, Reddit stops at 20, Twitch needs at least 4. Characters: X, Twitch and Reddit don't allow periods; Instagram, TikTok and Discord do, but Instagram won't let a name start or end with one and neither Instagram nor Discord allows two in a row. Placement: Twitch rejects a leading underscore. Most username generators ignore all of this, so you copy a name and the form throws it back. - The word lists. Cool pulls from words like lunar, ember and falcon. Cute leans on things like fluffy, mochi and otter. Gamer uses words like clutch, respawn and paladin. Professional sticks to plain, work-safe words like steady, ledger and studio. Every list is filtered through a blocklist, so none of the styles will hand you something rude by accident, including rude words formed where two words meet.
- Is what I type saved anywhere?
- No. The names are built in your browser from word lists that load with the page. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or tied to an account. Close the tab and it's gone.
